ACC Joins ABC, AHA to Denounce Racism and Violence

This has been a difficult year beginning with the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the far-reaching issues related to its spread, and now with racism and violence affecting us here in Minnesota and across the U.S. We would like to take this opportunity to firmly speak up against racism and join the fight against it.

On Monday, the ACC partnered with the Association of Black Cardiologists and the American Heart Association in this letter to denounce incidents of racism and violence. There is no doubt that systemic racism affects healthcare disparities among people of color. Together, we stand in solidarity with efforts to dismantle these systems.

On Tuesday, the ACC posted a President’s Letter where Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, shared ACC’s commitment to creating a profession and society that values every human, promotes diversity, and fights to address disparities. Dr. Poppas vowed that the college will continue to tackle factors that discriminate against those providing or receiving care in order to speak on behalf of the patients we have sworn to protect.

Moving forward, ACC-MN will continue these anti-racism efforts through its advocacy work, Board initiatives, and other outreach efforts.
